Saturday marked the first harvest of the season with pick-ups here at the farm. The long wait was finally over and in turn the first deliveries to the dropsites in Raleigh and Cary will commence tomorrow, Tuesday, through Thursday. Even though we got off to a one week delay, we will still have a 25 week season, by picking up one of the scheduled off weeks in September. Probably Sept. 4th, 5th, 6th and Saturday the 8th, so we can avoid the Labor Day weekend. We'll wrap the season up on November 8th with the last harvest on a Thursday in Cary. Our end of season Harvest Jam will probably be the Saturday before that, on November 3rd. But that's a long time away. For now, let's look at what's happening on the farm for this week and the next few. The Strawberries are in and are in great shape! Lots of members were out for pic-yer-own last Saturday and we picked a bunch too. I will try to pick at least two quarts per person to bring to each dropsite, factoring in how many folks loaded up over the weekend at the pic-yer-own. We will also have red bibb lettuce for everyone as well as plenty of mesclun salad mix. Its doing great right now. The Romaine lettuce needs at least another week. The radishes, spring onions and turnips are in great supply now, and we are getting a little bit of kale and a few mustard greens. Both were set back by the Easter cold snap In the coming weeks look for the sugar snaps and snow peas that need 2 to 3 weeks more growing time. Beets and cabbages just down the road, too. Carrots are up and plentiful as is the spinach and we should see them by the end of May, probably sooner on the spinach. Then some of the ten varieties of potatoes will start to come in. We've got red, whites, gold, blues and purples! We'll be picking yellow squash and zucchini by then too. And don't get me started on tomatoes, cukes, peppers, melons, snap beans and more for the summer! But for now, we're happy to be picking berries and lettuce and we look forward to seeing all the members at their dropsite this week! Please let us know asap if you can not be there, and please take time to read through the membership form I sent out to familiarize yourself with the details.
Thanks,
Farmer Fred
