Who is Hilltop Farms? Hilltop Farms in Willow Springs, NC is a Certified Organic Produce farm now in our eighth year of operation. We currently have 15 acres of cropland certified that has historically been tobacco farmland for generations. Hilltop Farms emerged out of the family-owned JC Rowland Farm in southern Wake County and is owned and operated by Fred Miller and wife, Virginia Rowland Miller, who was born and raised on the land. We are dedicated to exploring agricultural alternatives to conventional farming and traditional crops. We adhere to strict organic standards and strive to provide the healthiest food possible to our customers while maintaining and improving the health and sustainability of our soils. As Wake County's first and only USDA Certified Organic farm our long-term goal is to continue to transition conventional farmland into organic acreage as we contnue to expand our products to orgainc grains and feeds. What is a CSA? We grow a variety of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs that we distribute on a weekly basis to families who become members of the farm. A set number of memberships are offered in the winter and spring prior to the growing season. Members pay in advance for the food they will receive throughout the months of May through October. This advance payment allows the farm to purchase seed and other materials needed to grow the food, and allows the members to become partners in the farming process. Members may come to the farm on the designated pick-up day to receive their weekly “share” or choose to attend one of the drop-sites in either Cary or Raleigh, NC. On each harvest day the members make their selection of fruits and vegetables from a farmers market setting. They have flexibility in picking the quantity and variety of the items that fit their appetite. The produce is then weighed and priced and the result is deducted from their prepaid credit amount. Once the prepaid amount is used up, members may continue to purchase items and pay out of pocket. All members are welcomed to visit the farm and our eight-stall horse barn with family and friends on Saturday morning harvest days to pick up produce or anytime during the week. We host several socials during the year for members including; The Spring Planting Day Covered Dish Social, Mulch Madness Workday, and the end of year Harvest Party with food and music. Members are also welcomed to participate in the Pic-Yer-Own Strawberry Saturdays each weekend in May. There's always something going on down on the farm! |
What do we grow? The harvest season should typically start about mid-to-late-April and extend through October and into the first week of November, with a fall garden harvest. The Farm will provide information as to what is available each week via email or web site, or members may call the farm. We grow:
Hilltop's Commitment We are committed to growing all fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs in a completely natural and sustainable way that protects the soil and the health of our members. We will use NO CHEMICAL PESTICIDES, HERBICIDES, FUNGICIDES, OR FERTILIZERS on our crops and NO GENETICALLY- MODIFIED SEEDS ON OR IN OUR FIELDS. We provide a connection that has been lost in recent years between consumers and the land on which their food is grown. Our members share in the risk and the bounty that nature provides.
